Most Newfs, because of their great size are susceptible to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and heart disease. Subvalvular aortic stenosis is a canine heart disease that Newfoundland's are prone to. This condition causes the left ventricle to constrict, while rapidly decreasing the amount of blood flow out of the heart. Overtime, this heart disease can cause symptoms such as rapid breathing, rapid heart rate and even heart failure. To prevent Subvalvular aortic stenosis Newfoundland parents should have their heart scanned before breeding, and puppies should undergo regular checks.
Life Expectancy:
The Life expectancy of a Newfoundland usually depends on their size and how active they are. Being such a large dog, they need to stay active to maintain their health. The average lifespan of a Newfoundland is usually about 8-10 years.
