Temperament and Behaviour:
The Newfoundland is nothing short of your typical “gentle giant”. With its easygoing attitude and loving personality, it makes for a wonderful family dog. When it comes to children, an adult Newfoundland is very nurturing, gentle and patient. Whether it is a tug on the ear or a big warm hug, the Newf always remains calm. However, Newfoundland pups are very excitable and with their large size it can be unsafe for a small toddler.
Socially, Newfoundlands are great with other dogs, especially if socialized at an early age. Newfs also love to be around people. You will often find wherever their owners are the Newfoundland will not be far behind. Emotionally, these dogs can be very sensitive and sometimes develop anxiety issues if left alone. I guess these are just traits that come along with their big heart!
Vocally, Newfoundlands are usually quiet dogs. They are very calm and relaxed, and enjoy just observing their surrounds. When Newfs do bark it is usually for a reason, either there is someone at the door, or they are in protection mode and letting everyone around them know they're on watch.
Training:
When training a Newfoundland puppy, it’s best that you start early! Newfoundlands are very intelligent and independent dogs. Which if not trained early they can become quite stubborn and resistant to commands. It's important to remember that Newfoundlands are sensitive dogs: so to get a Newf to respond while training a calm and patient approach should be used. Newfoundlands do not respond well to an aggressive, strong-handed manner.
Be sure to use repetition when training your Newf. Focus on one skill you want them to learn, and continue to work on it till they get it right before moving on to another skill. Newfoundlands are smart, however, if many skills are being taught at once they may just get frustrated. When your Newf does get it right, be sure to give lots of praise and a delicious treat, liver seems to be their favourite! Once your Newf does learn what you have taught him, he will demonstrate it with ease.
Remember, Newfoundlands are naturally loyal dogs with a desire to please, so if trained properly they will do just about anything to make their owner happy.
